About Us

Burley is one of the New Forest’s most historic and delightful villages with many thousands of visitors each year. It is a quaint village of thatched cottages and wild ponies. The village has a long history of smuggling and witchcraft that dates back over 3000 years, including the famed Sybil Leek, a self-confessed white witch, who lived in the village .White witches spread goodwill, live close to nature, practice healing and astrology. Many of the gift shops now sell witch-related gifts and ornaments.

From Saxon times the life of the village has centered around the Manor, with its feudal system of cultivation, which over the centuries supported an entirely self–sufficient population. The Burley Manor is now a well supported and characterful  hotel.

Over the last fifty years, village life has been dramatically altered through improved transport links. Residents of the village benefit from the main line at Brockenhurst and the main commuter roads, the A31 and  M27 are only a few miles from the village. There is  an outstanding village school which was originally established in 1855, when the use of two acres of land was granted by the Forestry Commission.

Burley is the ideal location for a rural weekend retreat or that permanant escape to the countryside. The village boasts a strong and thriving community. There are two village halls supporting groups and activities for young and old, an excellent pre-school group and other local  amenities including a golf course, horse riding, several hotels, pubs and restaurants plus a much valued post office and general stores.

Unlike other villages in The Forest, Burley is a highly protected conservation and heritage area and thus new development is restricted to replacement dwellings only. This, in turn, gives home buyers the security of knowing that the housing stock will never be diluted , therefore ensuring that the village will forever retain its unique charm and character.
